Matthew 3:1-12 (ESV)
Key Verse: 3:3
First, John's message and ministry (1-6). John's message was simple: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." His lifestyle was also simple: living in the wilderness, wearing Elijah's outfit, and eating honey and locusts. He did this to fulfill his purpose: "Prepare the way for the Lord." People from all over responded to his message by repenting and being baptized by John. They realized they needed to be saved from sin. Their hearts were prepared for Jesus' coming.
Second, John rebukes religious leaders (7-12). Pharisees and Sadducees didn't come to repent, but to investigate John. They didn't think they needed anything, since they were Abraham's children. But John exposed the wrath hanging over their fruitless lives. He points them to Jesus. To those who receive him, he is salvation. To those who reject, he is the judge.
Prayer: Father, thank you sending messengers like John. Help me to respond with repentance and faith.
One Word: Prepare the way through repentance
