Romans 1:1-7 (ESV)
Key Verse: 1:1
First, Paul's identity in Christ (1:1-5). As we introduce ourselves to others, we often talk about our job, family or hobbies. However, Paul defines himself by his relationship with Christ. He introduces himself as a servant of Christ Jesus, one fully surrendered to the will of God. As an apostle, commissioned by the risen Christ, Paul had a clear God-given life purpose. He was God's chosen and specially crafted instrument who was set apart from the world to preach the good news of God. And this was the good news: Jesus Christ declared to be God's Son through his resurrection from the dead was the promised Messiah. And now, through the grace and apostleship he had received, Paul called the Gentiles to a blessed and obedient faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Second, who were they? (1:6-7) The believers in Rome were people loved by God. What could be more wonderful? God acted on his love by calling them to belong to Jesus and to live as holy people. Paul wished for them to enjoy the greatest blessing of all: the grace and peace that comes through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Father, we too have been set apart in Christ. Use us to preach the gospel around the whole world.
One Word: Live for the gospel of God
Acts 8:26-40
