Zophar's Reply

Date: Feb. 20, 2015

Passage

Job 20:1-29  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 20:29

First, the pride of the godless perishes forever (1-11). Zophar now prompted to reply because he felt Job rebuked him too. He used old thoughts more than God's word; the pride of the godless may reach to the heavens but perishes forever like his dung. His children must make amends to the poor. His youthful vigor will lie in the dust.

Second, the wicked cannot escape God's judgment (12-29). Zophar continued what would be the destiny of the wicked: The evil is sweet but soon becomes like venom that hurts within him. God will make him spit out riches, honey and cream he swallowed. All he toiled for will turn out in vain with no treasures saved at all. In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him. When he has filled his belly, God will vent his burning anger against him. He would never be able to run away from God and his judgment. The heavens will expose his guilt. Here, what Zophar said was right but he is wrong to apply it to Job.

Prayer: Lord, no wicked can avoid your judgment.

One Word: The fate of the wicked is disaster
