Abraham's Intercessory Prayer

Date: Mar. 5, 2015

Passage

Genesis 18:16-33  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 18:32

First, God shares with Abraham what he is about to do (16-21). God considered Abraham his friend so he would not hide anything from him. But first he reinforced his promise to Abraham to make him a great nation if he kept the way of the Lord. Then he shared with him his plans to check out Sodom and Gomorrah. God is not only our Father; he is the Righteous Judge who will judge sinners' sins.

Second, Abraham intercedes for Lot (22-33). Abraham remained standing before the Lord while the two angels went on their way. He began to plead for the sake of any there who were righteous. He reminded God of his righteous character to judge impartially. He was thinking of his nephew Lot who was living in Sodom. Abraham pleaded for God to save the cities for the sake of fifty, forty-five, forty, thirty, twenty and ten righteous persons. God was pleased with Abraham's intercessory prayer and later saved Lot from destruction (19:29). Like Abraham, we must intercede for people of our time.

Prayer: Lord, raise up prayer warriors for our times like Abraham. Have mercy on our nation. Amen.

One Word: Intercede for others and our land
