Matthew 5:33-48 (ESV)

Matthew 5:33-48 (ESV)
Key Verse: 5:48
First, say simply 'Yes' or 'No' (33-37). Oaths are tempting: exaggerating our abilities and potential accomplishments. Jesus says we have no control over heaven, earth, or even our own lives. Rather, Jesus tells us to live and speak by the truth in all areas of our life, so Satan may have no foothold.
Second, give to the one who asks (38-42). Evil people do evil. Instead of resisting, or bearing it, Jesus tells us to give, acting in love toward them. In this way we are not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Third, love your enemies (43-48). How can we do this? Only as we grow as God's children. God's children should make a great contrast with the world and reveal the love of our Father, who loved his enemies through the gospel. God is making us perfect as we follow his Son Jesus.
Prayer: Father, you are perfect in sacrificial love and truth. Please help me be like you today.
One Word: Follow God's example of love
