How to Be Rewarded by God

Date: Mar. 24, 2015

Passage

Matthew 6:1-8, 16-18  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 6:4b

First, do not seek man's reward (1-2, 5,16). In that religious culture and society, giving to the poor, prayer and fasting were common ways of practicing righteousness. Jesus wants us to do these with a right motive. People's praise is a tangible reward, but God's reward seems vague, because it is relational, not material. How can we receive his reward?

Second, seek God's reward (3-4, 6-8, 17-18). Rather than be honored by people for giving money, give in secret, to please our Father, who sees all. Pharisees prayed to be seen as righteous by others, and babbled on. We pray to the God who sees us, and know that he hears us. He answers our prayers. Fasting means self-denial. When we do so to seek God, we will experience a right relationship with him, and be satisfied (5:6). Fellowship with God, receiving his love and protection is the greatest reward.

Prayer: Father, your eye is always on me in love, looking to reward. Help my daily life be pleasing to you.
