Mark 14:27-42 (ESV)
Key Verse: 14:36
First, "you will all fall away" (27-31). Besides his betrayal, Jesus prophesied another painful event: the disciples would all fall away. It was foretold that the shepherd would be struck and the sheep scattered. But Jesus did not despair. He knew that he would rise and meet them again in Galilee. Peter insisted that he could die with Jesus. Peter was too self-reliant. Jesus prophesied that Peter would deny Jesus three times that very night.
Second, "not what I will, but what you will" (32-34). Jesus entered the garden of Gethsemane deeply distressed and troubled. His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. He asked three of his disciples to keep watch. Jesus prayed that the cup of suffering would be taken away from him. But he added, "yet not what I will, but what you will." Of course God's will is always best; but it is not always easy. While Jesus wrestled in prayer, his disciples slept. Their spirit was willing but their flesh was weak. The greatest battle in prayer is submitting to God's will ahead of our own.
Prayer: Lord, teach me to depend on you and follow your will. Help me to repent when I fail.
One Word: Not my will, but God's will be done
Acts 8:26-40
