Daily Bread

The Lord's Last Meal

Date: Mar. 30, 2015

Passage

Mark 14:12-26  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 14:24

First, preparing to eat the Passover (12-16). The Passover commemorated God's deliverance of his people from slavery through the Passover lamb. The lamb's blood protected God's covenant people from God's righteous judgment. Jesus, the Teacher, directed two disciples to find and prepare the place for the private Passover meal.

Second, teaching at the Passover meal (17-26). Jesus taught two things at this meal. First he taught that one of them would betray him. We already know it is Judas (10). The prophets foretold these things. But that doesn't negate Judas' treachery. Next, Jesus taught a new meaning of this meal. Jesus first gave thanks for the bread and drink, and gave them each to his disciples. The broken bread represents his body. The drink represents his blood. Jesus' blood establishes a new covenant, poured out for many (Heb 12:24). It was Jesus' last meal, but he looked ahead to God's kingdom (25).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for the new covenant, sealed in your blood. I take your body and blood in faith, hope and love.

One Word: The covenant in Jesus' body and blood
