The Believer's Struggle

Date: Apr. 26, 2015

Passage

Romans 7:14-25  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 7:24-25a

First, but I am unspiritual... (14-20). In 1 Corinthians 15:42-44, Paul writes, "So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body." Until that time, we live in a constant struggle with our old sinful natures. Although the believers are no longer bound to the law, we desire to obey it with our whole hearts because we want to please our Father. As Paul says, "I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out" (18b). So even Apostle Paul has these kinds of struggles? All believers do. This struggle, though, is a sign of the new life we have in Christ. We didn't use to struggle at all!

Second, the Lord rescues (21-25). Like Paul, in our inner beings we may delight in God's law. But the more we know God's law and long to satisfy it, the more we realize how sinful we are. Paul says, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?" (24). Like Paul, we need Jesus to deliver us. We need his spirit and power.

Prayer: Lord, give us your spirit to overcome our struggle.

One Word: God has delivered me through Jesus
