Romans 8:1-8 (ESV)
Key Verse: 8:1-2
First, we have been set free (1-4). Although we still struggle with our sinful natures, things are different now that we are in Christ. When Christ came into the world as a man, he lived a perfect life and bore the full punishment for our sin on the cross by offering himself as an offering for sin. In this way, the law was not forgotten, but fulfilled. We are free! We are free from the guilt and shame of all our failures. There is now no more condemnation for those in Christ! And now we live according to a new law: the law of the spirit. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we received our new birth in Christ and now he continues his work by giving us the power we need to live holy and God-pleasing lives.
Second, a profound comparison (5-8). There are really only two possibilities. We can live life according to the flesh or we can live our lives according to the spirit. Those who have set their minds on satisfying the desires of the flesh inherit death and cannot satisfy the law or please God. They are hostile to God. In contrast, those who have their minds set on satisfying the desires of the spirit find life and peace. The one who walks in the spirit of God lives a life that pleases him.
Prayer: Father, thank you for our freedom in Christ Jesus.
One Word: Our condemnation is gone!
