Matthew 11:20-30 (ESV)
Key Verse: 11:28
First, Jesus denounced unrepentant cities (20-26). Jesus performed many miracles in the towns of Galilee. But they did not repent. Jesus proclaimed woes, comparing them to patently wicked towns, to help them see their mistake. Yet Jesus was not without hope. He saw God's great wisdom and plan in weeding out the proudly wise and learned, and giving truth to children who will receive it humbly and follow him as Lord.
Second, Jesus invites the weary (27-30). How can we be like the children, and not like the unrepentant wise and learned? God committed the way of knowing him to Jesus. Through Jesus, we come to know God. Those who are weary and burdened in a sinful world, are welcome to receive true rest in Jesus. This rest comes to those who humbly follow and obey Jesus, taking his yoke. This is practical repentance. The rest we gain is greater than any worldly comfort; this is rest for our souls.
Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus' invitation. Please help me repent, follow him and find rest in him.
One Word: Find rest for your soul in Jesus
