Matthew 12:22-37 (ESV)
Key Verse: 12:28
First, Jesus refutes an irrational attack (22-29). When people saw Jesus heal a blind and mute man, they speculated he may be the Messiah. The Pharisees accused Jesus of working for the prince of demons to discredit him. Jesus points out that a divided kingdom cannot stand, and their own people drive out demons. Jesus' ministry was spiritual warfare against the work of demons. His coming by the Spirit of God displayed God's kingdom among them. Jesus overpowered Satan, and plundered his house, setting free those captive to sin.
Second, Jesus warns against evil words (30-37). Their idle words of accusation were not a light matter. They were in danger of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will not be forgiven. Jesus diagnosed their heart. Their words were the fruit of a heart full of evil: murderous intentions toward Jesus and jealousy. We will all give an account for the empty and careless words we speak.
Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus, whose work brought your kingdom. Help me repent my poor words and store up Jesus' words in my heart.
One Word: The Messiah Jesus brought God's kingdom
