Daily Bread

Consider the Kindness of God

Date: Jun. 10, 2015

Passage

Romans 11:13-24  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 11:22a

First, the future blessings of Israel (13-16). Although Paul was true to his calling as an apostle to the Gentiles, he longed for salvation to come to his own people. Paul hoped that his fellow Jews would see the work and life of Christ in his ministry and be aroused to claim it for themselves. One day, they will. Paul says, "For if their rejection brought reconciliation to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?" Their acceptance will have a tremendous impact on the world. Just as the remnant of Jews that God had preserved was holy, so will the whole batch be holy. The remnant is like a holy root that leads to holy branches in the future.

Second, do not be arrogant, but tremble (17-24). Gentile believers are like wild olive shoots that have been grafted into a cultivated tree. The picture is one of wondrous harmony as Jewish and Gentile branches thrive together as the people of God, drawing nourishing sap from the same root. The Gentiles might be tempted to become proud of their new position. However, Paul admonished them to consider the kindness and sternness of God. Gentiles must remember the kindness of God and continue in his kindness or they too will be cut off. Jews who believe in Christ will be grafted in again.

Prayer: Lord, we tremble in the wonder of your kindness.

One Word: Do not be arrogant, but tremble
