Romans 11:25-36 (ESV)
Key Verse: 11:26a
First, Israel's ultimate destiny (25-32). Paul reveals a mystery that gives perspective to the Gentiles and encouragement to the Jews. After the full number of Gentiles have entered into salvation, God will once more soften the hearts of his people and all Israel will be saved. This will happen when our Lord Jesus Christ returns: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob." Christ will purify the descendants of Jacob and take away their sin. Their rejection of the gospel gave opportunity to the Gentiles and they became like enemies to believers, but God will never forget his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He will save his chosen people. In the end, Gentiles and Jews alike will share a common experience of mercy. Both were disobedient and both were restored by God's wondrous act of mercy in Christ.
Second, our response to God's truth (33-36). It's our nature to want to understand everything about God's plan of salvation. But a full understanding is beyond our capacity. Does that cause us to doubt or to marvel? There is one thing we know for sure. God's work of salvation demonstrates his wisdom and sovereignty and it is all for his glory. Paul says that from him and through him and for him are all things. May His name be exalted forever.
Prayer: Father, your mercy extends to all nations and people and our rebellion has been overruled by your grace.
One Word: God will save his people
