In Jesus the Gentiles Will Hope

Date: Jun. 18, 2015

Passage

Romans 15:1-13  (ESV)

We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

  “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
    and sing to your name.”

10 And again it says,

  “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”

11 And again,

  “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
    and let all the peoples extol him.”

12 And again Isaiah says,

  “The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
  in him will the Gentiles hope.”

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Key Verse: 15:12

And again Isaiah says,

  “The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
  in him will the Gentiles hope.”

First, have the same attitude of mind that Christ had (1-7). We are all selfish. But Christ was not selfish. He did not please himself but rather was insulted for our sake. Therefore, in Christ, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak. We should please our neighbors and should build them up as Christ did. With the same mind of Jesus we should glorify God accepting one another.

Second, Jesus, the hope of Gentiles (8-13). Christ came as a Jew and served the Jews. But they rejected and killed him. However, the promise was fulfilled for all nations to be blessed through him. The Jews failed to do the priestly duty but Jesus brought the Gentiles to glorify God for his mercy. The God of hope for the Jews is the God of hope for the Gentiles too. We should go to all nations and preach Jesus, the root of Jesse, the hope of the Gentiles.

Prayer: Lord, help us to please others with the same mindset of Jesus. Let us share Jesus who is the hope of the Gentiles.

One Word: Preach Jesus, the hope of the Gentiles
