Genesis 36-37:11 (Read 37:1-11) (ESV)
Key Verse: 37:6
Chapter 36 closes Esau's lineage with 14 tribal chiefs in Edom, among 5 Horite chiefs. It sets up the longer account of Jacob's sons, especially Joseph and Judah to close out Genesis.
First, Daddy's favorite (1-4). Joseph was hated by his brothers for 3 reasons: he had a different mother (Rachel), he tattled on his brothers, and his father showed him favoritism with a special robe. Jacob caused this strife, since he loved Rachel more than Leah, and Joseph more than his other sons. Dads should not play favorites or show partiality, for God shows no favoritism (Ac 10:34).
Second, Joseph's dreams (5-11). Two dreams made Joseph's brothers hate him even more: first sheaves of grain, then the sun, moon and 11 stars bowed down to him. In jealousy, they rebuked him, "Do you intend to reign over us?" The dreams were not from a proud mind as they assumed; they were from God. His father also rebuked him, but kept the matter in mind.
Prayer: Thank you Father, that you show no favoritism but love us all, and that you give dreams and promises. Help us to keep your matters in mind.
One Word: Keep God's matters in mind
Acts 10:17-35
