Genesis 49:29-50:26 (ESV)
Key Verse: 50:20
First, Jacob's burial request (49:29-50:14). Just before Jacob died, he gave instructions that he wanted to be buried in Canaan, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and his wife Leah were buried. His request expressed his faith in God's promise. Jacob was embalmed for 40 days and mourned over for 70 days. Then Jacob's sons and all Pharaoh's officials traveled to Canaan to bury Jacob in the cave of Machpelah. After that, they all returned to Egypt.
Second, Joseph's faith and forgiveness (50:15-26). After their father died, Joseph's brothers feared Joseph might finally get his revenge on them. They thought he was just being nice for their father's sake. They said, "Dad wanted you to forgive us." As long as they did not ask Joseph's or God's forgiveness, they were tormented by guilty consciences. Joseph wept. He knew their intent was wrong, but God's intent marvelously prevailed. Joseph lived only 17 years in Canaan and 93 years in Egypt with 80 of them as a high official. But his heart and hope were in the land God promised Israel. There he wanted to be buried.
Prayer: Lord, your intentions are good and your plans are marvelous. Help me to trust you at all times.
One Word: God's intents and plans are good
