King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Date: Sep. 29, 2015

Passage

Matthew 21:23-32  (ESV)

23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

Key Verse: 21:32b

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

First, Jesus' authority (23-27). The chief priests and elders challenged Jesus' authority as if to say "Who ordained you?" But Jesus is God with "all authority in heaven and on earth" (Mt 28:18). Yet he is also the Good Shepherd and has compassion and mercy even on people such as us, who like the chief priests and elders are rebellious and live in deep darkness. Jesus loved them by telling them the truth: "the prostitutes and tax collectors are entering the Kingdom of God ahead of you..." (31).

Second, obedience (28-32). How often we are like the elder son in the parable of the lost son! We moan and groan and complain. We view our service to the Lord as something burdensome. How wicked this is!! We do not realize that Jesus is God: "'For I am a great King' says the LORD Almighty" (Mal 1:14). He is "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS"!!! (Rev 19:16) "It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God"! (Heb 10:31) We must repent of our flippant view of Jesus, of God. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" (Pr 9:10).

Prayer: Lord, you are God, a fearsome, holy and righteous King who one day will rule the nations "with a rod of iron." (Ps 2) Grant us repentance from our complaining, rebellious hearts so we may truly worship you as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

One Word: Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords - obey Him!

Misery of Disobedience

Genesis 34:1-31

Key Verse: 34:30

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”
