Matthew 26:1-16 (ESV)
Key Verse: 26:2
First, the sovereign will of God (1-5). The leaders of the Jewish nation planned Jesus' death. They thought they were in control. Little did they realize that God was in control, and had foreordained the sacrifice of "the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world" (Rev 13:8).
Second, a beautiful thing (6-13). Jesus is not suggesting we neglect Christian service to the poor, weak, hungry, orphans or widows. Rather, what a tremendous privilege and honor it is to serve him! A time is coming when it will no longer be possible to serve Jesus in certain ways that we can now-e.g., by loving the lost and providing for our brethren in need (1Jn 3:17).
Third, betrayal (14-16). Like the Pharisees and leaders of Israel, Judas too, no doubt, thought he was in control. Yes, he made a conscience choice to betray the Lord, but God is sovereign, and used his evil choice to accomplish his perfect will. So it is with all the choices of men and angels, good or evil.
Prayer: Lord, grant us repentance to deeply grasp that we have precious opportunities to serve you now that we will not have later.
One Word: Serve the Lord today!
Acts 8:26-40
Key Verse: 8:35
