Salvation Would Come out of Zion

Date: Dec. 18, 2015

Passage

Psalm 53:1-6  (ESV)

To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.

  The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
    They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity;
    there is none who does good.
  God looks down from heaven
    on the children of man
  to see if there are any who understand,
    who seek after God.
  They have all fallen away;
    together they have become corrupt;
  there is none who does good,
    not even one.
  Have those who work evil no knowledge,
    who eat up my people as they eat bread,
    and do not call upon God?
  There they are, in great terror,
    where there is no terror!
  For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you;
    you put them to shame, for God has rejected them.
  Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When God restores the fortunes of his people,
    let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

Key Verse: 53:6

  Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When God restores the fortunes of his people,
    let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

First, there is no one who does good (1-4). The fool here looks like Nabal in 1 Sam 25. He who says there is no God in his heart is a fool. Since he has no accountability to anyone he eventually becomes totally corrupt. His ways are vile. Actually when God searches for someone who seeks God among all people of the world, he can find no one. Everyone has turned away. The ungodly devour God's people as though eating bread. They never call on God. So there is no hope for all human beings.

Second, salvation will come out of Zion (5-6). He who has no God in his heart is still afraid of the judgment of God even when there is nothing to dread. God scatters the ungodly and despises them. Will there be any hope for us sinners? The only hope is in the coming messiah from Zion, Jesus Christ. God restores the fortunes of his people who accept him and rejoice in him.

Prayer: Lord, there is no good in us. Take away all our foolish ungodliness. Let us enjoy salvation that comes from Jesus our Savior.

One Word: Salvation is from Jesus
