Surely God is My Help

Date: Dec. 19, 2015

Passage

Psalm 54:1-7  (ESV)

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David, when the Ziphites went and told Saul, “Is not David hiding among us?”

  O God, save me by your name,
    and vindicate me by your might.
  O God, hear my prayer;
    give ear to the words of my mouth.
  For strangers have risen against me;
    ruthless men seek my life;
    they do not set God before themselves. Selah
  Behold, God is my helper;
    the Lord is the upholder of my life.
  He will return the evil to my enemies;
    in your faithfulness put an end to them.
  With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
    I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
  For he has delivered me from every trouble,
    and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

Key Verse: 54:4

  Behold, God is my helper;
    the Lord is the upholder of my life.

First, save me O God! (1-3). David was in a cave in a wilderness as a fugitive with around 400 distressed people. His life was greatly endangered by the report of ruthless Ziphites to Saul. David had no one who could help him. But he was not alone. He had God who is mighty. He cried out to God, "Save me, O God; Hear my prayer!" We encounter also many unexpected and dangerous situations in our pilgrimages. No one can help us. But Almighty God is with us. We can cry out to him.

Second, the Lord sustains me (4-7). David was strengthened in his prayer; Surely God would help him as he had sustained him always. The Lord would destroy his enemies. David would offer thanksgiving offerings to God. For he believed in advance that God had already delivered him from all his troubles. His eyes had looked in triumph on his foes. He could praise God for his victory even before fighting.

Prayer: Lord, I will cry out in my trouble. I will give thanks to you even before I have victory. Fill me with faith in God my Savior.

One Word: Surely God will sustain me

Victorious over Suffering and Death in Jesus

Revelation 2:1-11

Key Verse: 2:10

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
