Date: Dec. 30, 2015

Passage

Matthew 28:16-20  (ESV)

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Key Verse: 28:19a

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Frist, "All authority...has been given to me" (16-18). The eleven disciples met Risen Jesus in Galilee, most likely at the Mount of Olives. It was Risen Jesus' last meeting and message for them. They worshiped him, but some still doubted. Jesus told them that all authority in heaven and on earth now belongs to him from God the Father. Jesus is Lord of all, both in heaven and on earth.

Second, "Therefore, go and make disciples..." (19-20). Risen Jesus gave his followers the Great Commission. The main verb is "make disciples." The helping verbs (participles) are: "go," "baptizing" and "teaching." Jesus' church must make followers of Jesus in all nations, wherever God has put us now and will lead us later. Disciples are to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They are also to be taught to obey all of Jesus' commands, including these words. Risen Jesus has promised to be with his followers always.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are Lord of all. I want to be your obedient disciple and participate in making disciples of you, where I am now, and where you will lead me.

One Word: Be and make disciples of Jesus
