Mark 2:1-12 (ESV)
Key Verse: 2:10a
First, "Son, your sins are forgiven" (1-5). When Jesus went to Capernaum, huge crowds came out to him. They filled the house completely, and even spilled out all around the house. And Jesus preached the word of God to them. Among the crowd were four men trying to bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus to be healed. Undaunted by the crowds, they carried their friend to the roof and lowered him to Jesus through a hole in the roof. When Jesus saw the faith of this man's friends, he said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven." Our faith can be a blessing to others, as this man's friends were to him.
Second, Jesus' authority to forgive sins (6-12). Teachers of the law were there, and they grumbled that Jesus was blaspheming. No one can forgive sin but God alone. They were right about that. Only God can forgive sins. They refused to acknowledge that Jesus is God. So Jesus called them out, saying, "But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he told the man to get up, pick up his mat and go home. And that is exactly what he did, to the amazement of the crowd. Jesus' healing of this man showed his authority to forgive sins.
Prayer: Lord, only God can forgive sins. Thank you for Jesus, who is God who forgives sins.
One Word: Jesus has authority to forgive sins
