Mark 5:35-43 (ESV)
Key Verse: 5:36b
First, Jesus deals with unbelief (35-40). As Jesus finished blessing the bleeding woman, some people came from Jairus' household, telling him his daughter was dead, adding, "Why bother the teacher anymore?" To them, Jesus was a teacher, perhaps able to help a sick person, but after death, there was no use for him. Jesus turned to Jairus and said, "Don't be afraid; just believe." The news of his daughter's death made Jairus afraid and drove out his faith. Jesus restored his faith. He drove out his fear of his daughter's death and replaced it with faith. When they got to his house, Jesus told the mourners the girl was just asleep. They mocked him and laughed at him. But Jesus put out all who didn't believe, creating a place of faith so Jesus could work.
Second, Jesus raised the dead girl (41-43). When the unbelieving crowd had been put out, Jesus took the girl by the hand and said "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" The words of Jesus immediately worked, and the little girl was raised from the dead. Jesus told her parents not to say anything about what happened, and to get her something to eat. Jesus turned this family's fear into joy!
Prayer: Father, so often we fall into fear and forget our faith. Thank you for Jesus' reminder to not be afraid, but to just believe.
One Word: Don't be afraid; just believe!
