Daily Bread

Our Pure and Spotless King

Date: Mar. 24, 2016

Passage

Matthew 27:1-31  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 27:11

First, Judas and Pilate (1-26). Although Jesus was brought on trial before the chief priests, Pilate, and eventually the crowds, his innocence was clear. Even Judas, who had betrayed him, said that Jesus was innocent (4). In the midst of his interrogation, Pilate's wife sent to her husband he message of Jesus' innocence (19). When the crowds shouted to Pilate "Crucify him!" Pilate asked, "Why? What crime has he committed?" They couldn't answer. Our Lord's identity as innocent and holy Lamb of God becomes clearer and clearer to us. The innocent blood of our King would be shed for us.

Second, Jesus was handed over to the soldiers (27-31). The soldiers took Jesus, stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him. They put a crown of thorns on the Jesus' head and scornfully mocked the real king. They spat upon him and struck him on the head with a staff again and again. Then, they redressed him and led him away to be crucified. Isaiah writes, "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all" (Isa 53:6). Jesus endured this for you and for me.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are our precious Lord and King, who bore the shame and punishment that we deserve.

One Word: Jesus truly is the King of the Jews
