Matthew 27:32-44 (ESV)
Key Verse: 27:42
First, "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS" (32-40). On the way to Golgotha Simon was forced to carry Jesus' cross. Before being crucified, he was offered wine mixed with gall to dull his pain, but he refused it. He would take upon himself the full punishment for our sins. Those who crucified him gambled for his clothes. What a heartless sinners? A sign read, "THIS IS JSEUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS," was placed above his head to mock him, but ironically, it declared the truth. Jesus crucified between 2 robbers (Isa 53:12) is the king who saves us from our sins.
Second, he did not save himself to save others (41-44). During his earthly ministry Jesus healed the sick and raised even the dead. But on the cross he did not open his mouth, even when he was mocked and insulted by passersby, the religious leaders and even robbers beside him. Jesus took up our pain and shame (Isa 53:4).
Prayer: Lord, thank you for not saving yourself in order to save me.
One Word: Jesus was crucified for our sins.
Acts 8:26-40
