Godly Sorrow Brings Repentance

Date: Apr. 21, 2016

Passage

2 Corinthians 7:2-16  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 7:10

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

First, God comforted us (2-7). In his previous letter, Paul had harshly rebuked the church in Corinth for allowing immorality within their church, which is the body of Christ. Though Paul did this because he loved them, he was concerned that this might cause a broken relationship between them. Instead he received a report of great comfort to him from Titus. They had received Paul's words and repented. This brought Paul joy. He saw God's work there.

Second, see what this godly sorrow has produced in you (8-16). Worldly sorrow is not productive and only leads to death. Paul was happy to hear that the church in Corinth had repented as a result of his writing and the visit of Titus. They received his word with godly sorrow and were led to repentance. Paul was encouraged and confident when he saw this, for he could see that God was producing life in them through such sorrow. They were being led to salvation.

Prayer: Prayer: Lord, lead me in all things. Help me to have godly sorrow that I may be led to you.

One Word: Godly sorrow leads to salvation
