Make Every Thought Captive to Christ

Date: Apr. 25, 2016

Passage

2 Corinthians 10:1-18  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 10:5b

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

First, obedience to Christ (1-11). Paul appealed to the Corinthian church not to live according to the judgments and standards of the world. They viewed Paul as "bold" in his writing, but "timid" in person. But in this way they did not see him as a servant of God fighting a spiritual battle to preach the gospel of Christ. Paul exhorted them to take such thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ. When they judge by appearances they do not judge in the light of Christ, to whom all believers belong. How much more Paul was to them than either bold or timid. He was used by God to proclaim Christ to them and build them up in his gospel. If they have any other judgment, they should take those thoughts captive and obey Christ.

Second, one whom the Lord commends (12-18). Paul did not waste his time comparing himself with others, nor did he measure himself with himself. If he boasted, it was in how the gospel of Christ was expanding. If he had any hope, it was to be used by God to expand the gospel further. This is an example of how he made his thoughts, as well as his actions, obedient to Christ. He didn't commend himself, nor did he seek the commendation of others. He lived for the Lord's commendation only.

Prayer: Lord, make my thoughts obedient to Christ.

One Word: Every thought captive to Christ
