Leviticus 1:1-17  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Introduction to Leviticus

Key Verse: 1:9b, 13b, 17b

First, an offering without blemish (1-13). Chapters 1-5 detail the 5 major offerings prescribed by the Lord for Israel. God told Moses who then told the people what God required. The burnt offering was voluntary and represented devotion, commitment and complete surrender to God. It had to be a male without defect. Similarly, Christ was without sin. Laying a hand on its head identified the sinner with the atonement sacrifice: it died in one's place. Jesus died in our places. The burnt offering was offered up entirely to God. Jesus offered himself unblemished to God the Father for our sins once for all (Heb 7:27; 9:14).

Second, a pleasing aroma to the Lord (14-17). If one could not afford a bull or sheep or goat, a dove or pigeon could be offered. All of these were pleasing aromas to the Lord. All these offerings indicate that coming to the holy God is not a casual matter, even for God's covenant people. Do we tremble enough before the holy God?

Prayer: Lord, you are holy and I am sinful. Thank you for providing Christ to be my perfect, spotless sacrifice to bring me to you.

One Word: A pleasing and acceptable sacrifice
