Two Reckless Priests Die

Date: May. 13, 2016

Passage

Leviticus 10:1-20  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 10:3b

First, "I will be proved holy" (1-11). Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu, offered fire contrary to God's command and were killed by fire from God. God is holy and to be honored by those who approach him. Careless disobedience deserves death.

Moses told two cousins to carry the dead men outside the camp. Moses warned Aaron and his two other sons not to mourn but to hold their priestly posts, or they would die. They obeyed. God told Aaron that priests must not drink alcohol in the tent of meeting. They must distinguish between what is holy and common, between clean and unclean, and teach their people all the Lord's decrees.

Second, "Would the Lord have been pleased?" (12-24) Moses told Aaron and his remaining sons how to eat their offering share. Moses got mad when he learned they did not eat it, but burned it up. Aaron replied, "Such things have happened... Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?" Either he was fasting or too afraid to make a mistake. Since he sought to please God, it was acceptable.

Prayer: Lord, may my words and actions honor you as holy.

One Word: God is holy and to be honored
