The Day of Atonement (yom Kippur)

Date: May. 20, 2016

Passage

Leviticus 16:1-34   (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 16:30

"First, entering the Most Holy Place (1-19). A priest who randomly approached God would die. The high priest had to bathe, then put on the sacred high priest garments. He had to offer sin (purification) and burnt offerings first for himself and then for the people. Incense smoke protected him from seeing God's glory so he wouldn't die. Sprinkled blood consecrated the Most Holy Place. He had to consecrate the tent of meeting"

Second, once a year (20-34). This Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is still the most sacred day in the Jewish year. The priest confessed all the wickedness, rebellion and sin of the nation and a scapegoat carried it away from the community. This whole sacrificial system points to the amazing grace of Jesus Christ who bore our sins in his body as the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world (1Pe 2:24; Jn 1:29). Yom Kippur was once a year. Jesus' blood was shed once for all who repent and believe (Ro 3:25).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, eternal thanks and praise are due you for by your blood we are cleansed, redeemed and made holy.

One Word: Jesus' blood was shed once for all
