Psalm 86:1-17 (ESV)
Key Verse: 86:11
Teach me your way, O LORD,
that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
First, "You alone are God" (1-10). David was poor and needy under assault by arrogant foes. He prayed to his God. He called himself "your servant," and said, "You are my God." He saw God who is "forgiving and good," who answers his prayer, and that "no deeds compare with yours." He concludes, "You alone are God." Prayer is the time to remember and turn our focus to God, and to remember our identity as his servant.
Second, "Give me an undivided heart" (11-17). In view of the greatness of God, David's situation was less important than his desire: "Teach me your way, Lord." He longs to rely on God's faithfulness. The world's problems seem to pull him and divide him, but he prays for an undivided heart, to fear, praise and glorify God forever. Then he is able to present the conflict with his enemies to God, assured of God's ability, mercy, and strength. He concludes, "give me a sign of your goodness."
Prayer: Father, you alone are God. Thank you for hearing my prayer today. Teach me your ways.
One Word: Give me a sign of your goodness
