David and Jonathan's Friendship

Date: May. 10, 2018

Passage

1 Samuel 20:18-42

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 20:42

1. Saul's intent is revealed (18-33)

To complete their plan to determine Saul's intent, David and Jonathan arranged for a signal, so they would not be seen meeting in person. Jonathan would shoot arrows and tell a boy to retrieve them from one side or the other of a stone. At the feast, when Jonathan made an excuse for David's absence, Saul lashed out, unable to contain his jealousy and murderous desire. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David.

2. Real friendship (34-42)

After Jonathan sent the signal, he and David met together for one last time. They embraced and wept together, but David wept the most. David and Jonathan's friendship is an example for all time. Jesus' goal is to make us friends like this (Jn 15:13).

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us the power of friendship in our lives. Help me build up your church based on true friendship.

One Word: The power of friendship
