David, Shepherd of Outcasts

Date: May. 12, 2018

Passage

1 Samuel 22:1-23 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 22:2

1. Lost sheep come to David (1-5)

After leaving Gath, David found a hideout in a cave at Adullam. David was a fugitive, but he was still a shepherd. People in trouble and distress knew they could come to David and find a place. He sent his own family into exile in Moab and took care of the outcasts who had come to him. In this, David resembles Jesus.

2. Saul, a wolf in sheep's clothing (6-23)

Saul the king should have been the shepherd of his people, but his jealous obsession with David made him truly evil. When Saul accused his own officials of collaborating with David, a foreigner, Doeg the Edomite, told him that the priest Ahimelech had helped David. Ahimelech pointed out David's loyalty to Saul. Saul gave an order to execute the priests, but none of his men would do it, only Doeg. Abiathar, son of Ahimelech, was the only one to escape; he joined David.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that outcasts are welcome in your kingdom. Raise up real shepherds like David for the young people of this land.

One Word: A shepherd heart makes a shepherd
