New Wine for New Wineskins

Date: Dec. 20, 2019

Passage

Luke 5:33-39 (ESV)

33 And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 5:38

But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

1. Jesus is the bridegroom (33-35)

Jesus had attended a great banquet, and he and his disciples ate with everyone else. This planted a question in the minds of the Pharisees and teachers of the law. Everyone else's disciples fasted-why not Jesus' disciples? Jesus explained that he is the bridegroom. He came to be bound to sinners, to bear their sins and bear them to the kingdom of God. It is time to be joyful because of him. In the same way Jesus would not ne here long. He would be crucified at the hands of those who now confronted him. He would be taken, and they would mourn and fast with true sorrow.

2. A new garment and new wine (36-39)

Jesus taught them through a parable that new life had come. He did not come to fix something old, or to patch up their religion. He came to give life and make new. In order to accept the new teaching, we must receive new life. That can only happen when we accept Jesus as our bridegroom and live as new garments and new wineskins.

Prayer: Lord, help me to receive Jesus as the bridegroom and the new life, given for me.

One Word: Jesus gives new life
