Love Must Be Sincere

Date: Feb. 5, 2020

Passage

Romans 12:9-21 (ESV)

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Key Verse: 12:9

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.

1. Love sincerely (9-16)

One of the gifts we all have is love. We must love each other with sincerity. Sincere love hates evil. It looks to only what is good. It honors others over ourselves. Our sincere love for Jesus helps us to serve him with zeal. We live in the hope of God and we pray fervently, which helps us through times of affliction. Jesus practiced sincere love by blessing even his enemies. We can show this same kind of love rejoicing with those who rejoice, and mourning with those who mourn. By doing these things we can live in harmony with everyone.

2. Loving in a hostile world (17-21)

We will sometimes be treated badly by others. We should not treat them badly in return. Rather, we should live at peace with everyone. We want to take revenge on those who hurt us. But we shouldn't. We should not take revenge on those who hurt us, but leave the judgment to God. Rather we should bless and feed our enemies as Jesus did. When we do, they may come to see the reason we live this way and repent.

Prayer: Prayer: Lord, help us to love others, even our enemies. Help me not to be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good.

One Word: Love one another
