Victory Through Jesus!

Date: Apr. 12, 2020

Passage

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

Mystery and Victory

50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55   “O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:57

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1. Death has been swallowed up (50-57)

Our perishable body will be exchanged for an imperishable body because flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God. This will happen in a twinkling of an eye when Jesus comes with the trumpet sound. Then the dead will be raised and the mortal will be clothed with immortality. Our last enemy, death, will be swallowed up in victory. For sin, that caused death, was forgiven. Sin's power, the law, was paid in full through Jesus' death. Praise Jesus Christ our Lord who gives us victory over death!

2. Your labor in the Lord is not in vain (58)

This life is not everything. Eternal life that bears the glorious image of Jesus is guaranteed for us believers: Victory over death in Christ Jesus! Therefore, we should stand firm and let nothing move us. We should give ourselves always and fully to the work of the Lord, for we know that our labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Prayer: Lord, let me always and fully give myself to your work, for I know that only what I give to you will never be in vain.

One Word: O victory in Jesus!
