The King's Edict on Behalf of the Jews

Date: May. 8, 2023

Passage

Esther 8:1-17 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 8:17

And in every province and in every city, wherever the king’s command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

After condemning Haman for his malice, the king gave his authority to Mordecai by making him the carrier of the king's signet ring. The king also gave Haman's estate to Esther (Prov 21:15). However, Esther could not be at peace as her people were still under the edict Haman had written and sealed with the king's signet ring (3:10,11). Since the king's edict written in his name could not be revoked even by the king himself, permission was given to Mordecai to write another decree on behalf of the Jews. The news was delivered to each province with great urgency (14).

Mordecai's decree permitted the Israelites to arm and defend themselves against enemies who might come to attack them and plunder their properties (11). The enemy always seeks to make us fail and despair. Instead of living in fear, as God's people, we must put on full armor and be ready to fight to stand our ground (Eph 6:13). Will you come before the Lord with your fear and desperation today?

The news brought great joy to all Jews and fear for all enemies. Many Gentiles became Jews. The Lord displayed his presence among his people to strengthen and equip them to overpower their enemies.

Prayer: Prayer: Father, thank you for hearing my prayer and delivering me when I am devastated. I have nothing to fear when I hold onto your promise.

One Word: One Word: The Lord is on my side.
