Saul is Anointed As King

Date: Jun. 1, 2024

Passage

1 Samuel 10:1-27 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 10:1

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the LORD anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the LORD and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the LORD has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.

When Samuel called Saul to be alone with him, Samuel anointed Saul as a king by pouring oil on his head and kissing him.

Saul was provided with signs to understand that it was indeed the will of God. Samuel told him that he would hear about the donkeys (2), would be greeted by worshippers of God who would offer him bread (3), and then the spirit would come upon him to prophesy with a procession of prophets (6). These were the signs for him to know that God was with him (7).

Then Saul experienced the signs and with a changed heart, he prophesied with the prophets. And as it seemed he was obeying Samuel’s words, he kept it to himself. Yet when Samuel called the people of Israel to assemble, Saul was hiding (22), and had to be brought out. This man had every human quality to be a king and even received the blessing of the Spirit. Yet, he did not recognize the presence of the Lord in his life (6,7). Are you called to serve the Lord and the people? It is not who you are that matters. God has chosen you to serve him and he will be with you.

Prayer: Father, thank you for calling me as your servant. I have nothing to boast. But I trust you to guide me to serve you to do your will.

One Word: For God is with you.
