Passage

1 Samuel 22:1-23 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 22:2

David was hiding in the cave of Adullam (1). We can glimpse into David’s heart through Psalm 142. He cried out to the Lord to set him free and to have righteous friends (Ps 142:6,7). He was not alone for much longer. First, his brothers and relatives joined him, and then all those who were distressed, in debt, and discontent joined him (2). Through this time of trial and struggle, David learned to find his refuge in the Lord, to shepherd those who were dismayed, and raise them into mighty warriors.

In the meantime, Saul found out about the priest Ahimelek giving food and Goliath’s sword to David. Even though Ahimelek was not aware of the recent development of the bad relationship and had no intention to conspire against him, Saul ordered the execution of Ahimelek and the other priests in town. 85 priests were killed, and a great massacre was brought to the town of Nob. Saul was blinded with envy and jealousy and committed the great sin of shedding innocent blood (Gen 9:6).

Abiathar, son of Ahimelek escaped the murderers and joined David. And David provided refuge and comfort to him (23).

Prayer: Father, thank you for coming to meet me in my cave and giving me the light of eternal life. I find my comfort and refuge in you.

One Word: The Lord is my refuge
