The Proud Will Be Brought Down

Date: Oct. 14, 2024

Passage

Ezekiel 31:1-18 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 31:18

“Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the world below. You shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.”

God spoke to Pharaoh through Ezekiel. He likened Pharaoh to the nation of Assyria. Assyria was a great and powerful nation whose beauty was without comparison. It was like a cedar tree, taller and more beautiful than all the others, the envy even of the trees in the garden of God.

What did God do? He promised to bring Pharaoh and Egypt down because of their pride. They were blessed by God to be the highest and loftiest of the trees, but they became proud of their blessings. God promised that no other trees or nations were ever to succumb to pride and tower over others. The Lord would give Egypt to ruthless foreign nations to be cut down. The nations would tremble and mourn at the sight when Pharaoh and his hordes were brought down.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your many blessings. Help me not to become proud, but to serve and worship you.

One Word: Be humble before God
