In defiance of the Lord’s word through Micaiah, Ahab king of Israel went up to fight the Arameans at Ramoth Gilead, and Jehoshaphat went with him. In spite of efforts Ahab made to disguise himself (and to expose Jehoshaphat!), he was struck by an arrow shot seemingly at random and died from his wound later the same day. This exactly fulfilled the word of the Lord through Elijah (21:19). Ahab’s son ruled in his place, but he was wicked as well (52). Soon the full judgment against Ahab’s family would come, as had been prophesied (21:21; Prov 16:4).

Jehoshaphat had been foolish to join the battle after hearing Micaiah’s prophecy, but the Lord let him escape with his life (32-33). This was not the only time Jehoshaphat had to learn a lesson to be steered away from greedy pursuits (48).

All plans undertaken apart from the Lord’s blessing will fail (Prov 19:21). The only way to obtain a good outcome in our life is to honor the word of the Lord above our selfish desires.

Prayer: Father, thank you that your word proves true without fail. Help me honor your word above earthly success or prosperity.
