Passage

Daniel 5:1-21 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 5:20

But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him.

Sometime later, King Belshazzar, a descendant of Nebuchadnezzar, ruled the empire. At his party for 1,000 nobles and their wives and concubines, they drank from the gold and silver goblets from the temple in Jerusalem and praised other gods. Then, a hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall near the lampstand so they could all see. The king was terrified, and his knees shook. He called for the wisemen and offered great rewards. But no one could solve it. Then, the queen mother came into the hall and urged the king to call for Daniel.

Daniel reminded the king of Nebuchadnezzar’s story. In his generation, God raised him up to be the greatest. But when he became arrogant, God humbled him and made him like an animal until he confessed that God is Most High, and he sets over kingdoms anyone he wants. We learn how important it is to teach the next generation about God Most High – to worship him and to acknowledge him as Sovereign Lord, who humbles the proud and raises up the humble.

Prayer: Lord, please help me to have a sense of history and to honor God as Most High. Help my children to worship you and be humble.

One Word: Humbly fear God and worship him
