Is It Because There is No God in Israel?

Date: Mar. 16, 2025

Passage

2 Kings 1:1-18 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 1:3

King Ahab had been wounded and died in battle, as prophesied. Then his son Ahaziah took the throne. When Ahaziah was injured in a fall, he did not seek the Lord, but rather the God of Ekron—Baal-Zebub. The Lord sent his angels to give Elijah a message for the king. “Is it because there is no God in Israel?” King Ahaziah rejected the God of Israel, choosing instead to live as a godless person. He sought help from worthless idols—not the Lord. According to the word of the Lord, he would certainly die. There is no life apart from God.

When King Ahaziah heard the message, he knew it was Elijah. He sent companies of men to bring the prophet, but God protected Elijah, sending fire from heaven to consume the first two detachments. The captain of the third detachment approached Elijah humbly, so Elijah went with him. He told the king that because he did not seek the Lord, but sought the God of Ekron, he would certainly die. Ahaziah died in accordance with the word of the Lord. God is the source of life and blessing in this world. He is the one we must seek in all things.

Prayer: Lord, you are my life in every way. Help me not to seek help from money, fame or worldly things. Protect me from idol worship and help me seek you only.

One Word: Seek the Lord in all things
