Complacency and Pride Judged

Date: Apr. 11, 2025

Passage

Amos 6:1-14 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 6:1a

The Lord rebuked the nation of Israel for their complacency. They were prosperous, well-fed, militarily secure, and self-indulgent. But they were also unrepentant. They did not “grieve over the ruin of Joseph.” (6) Because they were so comfortable, they forgot God and his provision for them. But they were so prosperous, well-fed, and secure precisely because of the blessings of God. They should have thanked and praised him. Instead, they ignored God. For that, they would go into exile in Assyria.

The nation of Israel was also full of pride. They were full of pride because they thought their wealth and security would last forever. The sin of pride goes hand-in-hand with the pride of complacency. The Lord abhors pride in his people. Their pride caused them to turn justice into poison and righteousness into bitterness. They were so far into their sin they could not even utter the name of the Lord. So, the Lord would stir up the nation of Assyria against them. He would deliver up Israel to a nation that would oppress them.

Prayer: Father, it is so easy for complacency and pride to come into my heart. Help me to repent of these sins and humbly come to you.

One Word: Don’t be complacent
