2 Chronicles 24:17-27 (ESV)
Key Verse: 24:20b
First, Joash abandons the temple (17-20). After Jehoiada's death Judah's officials paid homage to Joash. They influenced him to turn back to idolatry, abandoning the temple he had rebuilt. God's anger against them was the expression of his love. He sent prophets to turn them back, but they would not listen. The Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada to give them God's word of rebuke. Their disobedience separated them from God. God sought to restore them.
Second, the result of forgetting God's grace (21-27). However, God's people didn't remember God's grace. Even King Joash forgot all of God's kindness to him through Jehoiada, and had Zechariah killed at the temple of the Lord. God raised the Arameans, who with a small army thoroughly defeated Judah. Joash was assassinated in his bed and was not honored in his burial as other kings had been.
Prayer: Father, thank you for your patient love. Help me to obey you, not the influence of evil men.
One Word: Obey the Lord's command
