Amaziah Did Not Listen to the Lord

Date: Sep. 6, 2014

Passage

2 Chronicles 25:14-28 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 25:20

First, "God has determined to destroy you" (14-16). After his victory, Amaziah became proud and foolish. He burned sacrifices to the idols of Seir. God sent a man of God to reach out to him with logic: "Why worship gods you defeated?" But this time Amaziah would not listen to the man of God. Amaziah threatened to kill him. Since he ignored God's counsel in pride, God determined to destroy him. They say, "Pride comes before the fall."

Second, the result of pride: Amaziah's tragic end (17-28). Without God's wisdom, Amaziah became very foolish, and started a war with Israel. The king of Israel even counseled him against this, pointing out Amaziah's pride, but he would not listen. Judah was thoroughly defeated, Jerusalem left defenseless, and the Lord's temple emptied. Amaziah was hunted down and killed by his own people.

Prayer: Father, forgive my pride in the time of victory. Help me be humble to listen to your word.

One Word: God opposes the proud
