What Matters to God

Date: Sep. 16, 2014

Passage

2 Chronicles 32:24-33 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 32:26

But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

First, Hezekiah's humiliation and healing (24-30).

After all his victories, Hezekiah faced severe illness, and almost died. He prayed to God and was healed. But this time his heart was proud, and he did not respond to the kindness shown him. All his past victories and works could not shield him from God's wrath. God does not show favoritism. But when he repented of the pride of his heart, as did his people, God withheld his wrath. Furthermore, God continued to bless him, giving him very great riches and helping him succeed in everything.

Second, God tests Hezekiah's heart (31-33). When envoys from Babylon came, God used it as a test to reveal Hezekiah's heart. Hezekiah showed the envoys everything in his kingdom. Eventually, Babylon would take them all captive.

Prayer: Father, you oppose the proud but give grace to the humble. Forgive my proud heart.

One Word: God gives grace to the humble
