Daily Bread

Gracious and Merciful is God

Date: Nov. 14, 2014

Passage

Nehemiah 9:22-38  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 9:31

First, a bad repeating cycle (22-31). Fallen man abandons God after being blessed. In times of distress, we cry out to God. God hears and shows mercy. Then the cycle repeats. God gave his people the well-furnished land of Canaan. Even so, they became disobedient, rebellious and turned their backs on God. They even killed prophets who came to warn them. So God gave them over to their enemies. Then they cried out to God. In great compassion God gave them deliverers to rescue them. But in a time of rest, they again did evil. So God abandoned them. They cried out. Then God delivered them again. They repeated this throughout their history. Yet God did not put an end to them, for he is so great in mercy.

Second, we make a binding agreement (32-38). We are wicked. God is faithful and righteous. The prayer turns to the present: see our hardship, slavery, and great distress, which we deserve for our sins. Now we are making a binding written agreement before God (Ch.10).

Prayer: Faithful, righteous and merciful God, forgive our rebellion and disobedience. Heal us to love and serve you with joy and humility.

One Word: God is so gracious and merciful!
