In the Beginning God....

Date: Jan. 3, 2015

Passage

Genesis 1:1-5  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Introduction to Genesis

Key Verse: 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

First, God created the heavens and the earth (1). The Bible opens with a declaration: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." This verse provides the basis by which we can understand Genesis, the rest of the Bible and the world. This verse tells us that God is eternal, God is almighty, and God is the Owner of all things. The heavens and the earth came into being by a specific, deliberate act of God. When we begin with an almighty, eternal God, we can make sense of all creation and life itself, including our own.

Second, "Let there be light" (2-5). Though God brought the earth into existence, it was formless, empty and dark before he spoke. God did not leave the earth that way. He called forth light. His word has absolute authority and power. Light set the stage for all life. He saw that the light was good and he separated the light from the darkness. Light was called day and darkness was called night and thus ended the first day.

Prayer: Lord, you are almighty, eternal and sovereign. You created the heavens, the earth and light. Help us to hold on to this truth by faith. Please shine your light into our dark world today.

One Word: God created the heavens and the earth
